Koi Fish Ponds
|
What makes a good Koi Pond?
A good Koi pond should be built in such a way that it is a joy to see from a landscaper's point of view, but it is not just that. It should be engineered in such a way that the Koi will grow in a healthy, clean and uncrowded environment underwater.
Koi, a Japanese fish variety, can grow to a length of up to thirty inches. This is a very important thing to consider when building a Koi pond because you would not want to put too much work in maintaining the pool if it becomes overcrowded as the fish grow.
When building a pond of any sort, it is important to remember that the pool should not require much work, so that you can enjoy the pond to the fullest. Why would you build something if it will require most of your time, that you consider even viewing it a chore? Thus, the pond should have a minimal need for supervision.
You also need to have a good enough location for you and your visitors to have a great view of the pond. It should be located somewhere that you can relax and soothe your eyes.
‘The Koi Pond that Works Best’
So what really makes a good Koi pond? Take a look at the following considerations when building a good Koi pond that will work best for you:
1. It should be easy to maintain healthy Koi in the pond.
The water should be crystal clear, with minimum sand at the bottom so that the beautiful jewel-like colors of the Koi fish can be shown off. You should keep in mind the maximum length that the Koi fish can grow, so it will not do to have too many fish crowded in one pond while they are still small, and have the problem of overcrowding when they grow big enough.
2. The Koi pond should be deep and wide enough for the number of fish that you have.
At the very least, the pond should be able to hold 5,000 gallons of water. You can draft a layout of depth and width of the pond, depending on how shallow or deep you would like it to be.
The shape of the pond should not be irregular, since you want to pull the water through your filter system. If the water would not pass through your filter system, it will easily get muddy and unclean, which is not good at all for the Koi fish.
3. The pond should be ideally located.
The Koi pond that you will be building should be located somewhere that you and your houseguests can easily enjoy. However, if you have limited space within the house, it may be located at a nearby place with enough space where you can still enjoy a good view of the pond.
It should also be built away from direct sunlight. You do not want algae to turn the water green, making it unsightly and making the water dirty if the Koi pond is exposed directly under the sun. You also would not want to build the pond directly under a tree, where leaves and twigs falling off could provide unsightly mess on the water.
4. The surface of the pond should be smooth and even.
If you plan to line the surface of your Koi pond with rocks, make sure that they are smooth and distributed evenly. You do not want your fish to get trapped on gaps in between rocks, or their bodies to get cut with sharp stones while swimming.
If you keep these things in mind, you will surely be able to build a Koi pond which you can view and enjoy to your utmost advantage. Finally, it is good to learn more about Koi breeding and growing so that the fish on your Koi pond will grow healthy and strong. |
